Citing Pioreactor

If you use Pioreactor in a paper, thesis, preprint, poster, presentation, or course, we appreciate a citation or acknowledgement.

We do not have a formal peer-reviewed reference paper yet. For now, cite Pioreactor directly and include enough detail in your methods for someone else to understand what you used.

What to mention in your methods

Pioreactor hardware and software are used together, so one citation is enough. In your methods, add the details that matter for reproducibility:

  • the Pioreactor model, such as 20 mL or 40 mL
  • the Pioreactor software version
  • any accessories that affected the experiment, such as pumps, vial caps, OD monitoring, temperature control, stirring, dosing, or plugins

For example:

Experiments were performed using Pioreactor 20 mL / 40 mL bioreactors from Pioreactor Inc. (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada).

Suggested acknowledgement

If a citation does not fit the venue, you can acknowledge Pioreactor in your methods, poster, slides, or course materials.

Microbial growth experiments were monitored and controlled using Pioreactor, a Raspberry Pi-powered bioreactor platform from Pioreactor Inc. (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada).

For a more specific methods statement:

Microbial growth experiments were monitored and controlled using Pioreactor 20 mL / 40 mL bioreactors with optical density monitoring, temperature control, stirring, and programmable dosing.
